Hmmm, I suppose our excitement should be reason #1 that you should attend the inaugural event but I do have so many reasons to share.

#UWP2017A little back story first.

I am a mom of three young adults and I have worked with families almost my entire life.

You can read my full story HERE but I do offer a brief overview, and my insight, below.

Prior to working in the juvenile detention system I did many of the jobs that girls of my generation, and in my community, did to earn extra income.

I was a babysitter, a nanny and a “Mother’s Helper” working with intact upper middle class families who were seemingly happy.

However, even back then I found the title of  “Mother’s Helper” to be pretty odd. Wasn’t I also helping dad when I was taking care of the kids and the home?

It seemed that there was always a definitive division in household chores and parenting duties. I found that to be interesting and I reflected on it often as I considered if I wanted to have kids once I was a bit older.

My final job before the juvenile detention system was with a family that was quite different then any I had worked for before.

Dad shared at least half of the work, he was fully and completely involved and he had a very close relationship with his child. It was admirable but yet it was not. I admired it but his community did not.

I then worked in the juvenile detention system as a Youth Counselor. My job was to help the children to express themselves and to help bridge the gap of communication between them and their legal guardian. Sometimes this was mom, sometimes dad, sometimes both. Other times it was grandparents or other relatives. I loved my work but it was very difficult.

Now we fast forward through years of experience and add in the very unique experience of being a parent.

Mr. Ho, affectionately know in this blog as “the hubby” or “the Mr.”, and I became parents in 1995.

In many ways we were a traditional family (except in the fact that we are a different ethnicities and raised in different religions).

I worked through my pregnancy and even for the first months after our baby boy was born. Then the Mr. and I made the choice for me to be a Stay-At-Home-Mommy. It was a wonderful choice for us.

Eventually I became a Work-At-Home Mommy. This unfolded rather naturally as my neighbor had gone through a very tough divorce and was desperate to leave her baby with someone she trusted. I loved doing this. This little guy grew to be a wonderful friend to our oldest son.

Word spread and I had more parents asking me to help with their kids and a licensed child care was born. It was so wonderful, I loved working with these kids and helping such a diverse group of parents. Overtime, my kids got older (as they do) and I shifted a bit but always stayed true to my heart and was always working to help individuals and families.

It was sad to me that at times there was much support in the world of parenting and at other times such a terrible lack of support. It bothered me that parents judged other parents, mothers judged mothers and fathers judged fathers. I worried that people were not getting the resources that they need to be the very best parents that they can be.
