Holiday Decorating

The day after Turkey Day was a lovely day as well as a day to consider holiday decorating.

We did have to spend some time cleaning and dealing with a few issues but we also relaxed, enjoyed leftovers, and spent time together as a family.

When day turned to night I decided that I wanted to do some holiday decorating in the inside of the house. The outside decorating was already complete.

My mother-in-law saw that we use an artificial tree and immediately expressed her opinion.

She believes that real is better.

With much patience, I explained that we use artificial for five reasons.

  1. Artificial is cleaner
  2. This makes it less work through the holiday.
  3. The lights are built into it.
  4.  It is easier.
  5. Our son is not allergic to it.

I did not really sell her on the first four reasons but the last reason won her over to my side.

After getting the tree set up we hung the ornaments as we reminisced about what each ornament represents for us. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care and the menorah was returned to it’s rightful spot. We set out our Chanukah house, our Christmas house and our ceramic grocery store. Added to all of these festive items were my collections of dreidels and snow globes. I hope to add to the dreidel collection this year. Last year, I did not as I did not find anything that really excited me.

As I look around my home, I feel joy emanating from all of these lovely memories.

The one that makes me laugh is the Buddha who is now holding a Chanukah Bear and wearing a Santa hat.

This is a true expression of my household and what holiday decorating looks like for us.
