I am often asked which I would pick if I was comparing BlendTec vs Vitamix.
Blenders are great for a variety of purposes such as preparing soup, dressings, salsas, and green smoothies. To do these things, and to do them well, the greatest tool that one can have is a high quality blender. This, of course brings up the question on everyone’s mind… BlendTec vs Vitamix.
Both of these blenders will crush ice, puree almonds and even grind up a car.
Ok, maybe not that last one but they will do a great job of pureeing, masticating and turning simple ingredients into wonderful ice cream.
It is rare for a day to go by without hearing an opinion, or a question, as to which one is better. They will both get the job done, they are both considered to be commercial quality, and they are both on the pricier side of the spectrum.
So, who is the winner when you put BlendTec vs Vitamix?
These machines are comparable in power, ability and noise. The noise is said to be lower in the BlendTec model, but one reviewer states, “I cannot tell the difference in noise levels. I cannot listen to the radio, talk on the phone or have a conversation with someone in the room while either blender is running”. When speaking to ease of cleaning there is again a close contest as an independent reviewer states, “both covers had nooks and crannies that make cleaning somewhat difficult and the Vitamix cover is awkward to release.”
In the case of both blenders, each manufacturer does recommend cleaning immediately after use.
BlendTec is considered to be more user friendly as it has automated cycles which allow you to press a button and walk away. This can help not only the adult consumer to be more likely to use this blender, but also make it more kid friendly.
With the Vitamix machine it is said that you have more control because you are actively involved in adjusting speeds and powers to achieve the proper consistency. One issue with this is that if you over blend you begin to melt your product. This is especially problematic if you are making ice cream, or a frozen shake.
When preparing soup, reviewers were mixed in their feelings on temperature. However, all said that when considering hot soup neither machine made it truly hot. Furthermore it would be necessary to use water that was already hot.
According to each blender company the blender will heat the water.
The other side of this argument is that if you reach over 118 than the food is no longer considered raw and you have started to break down the nutrients.
Vitamix has a plunging system which according to the company is absolutely necessary to be able to push your ingredients down into the blade system so that they can do their magic properly. BlendTec states that with their two prong system and specially designed jars this is not necessary and the blender can do the work on its own.
BlendTec in fact sued, and won, a lawsuit against Vitamix in 2011 for patent infringement. The original lawsuit awarded 11 million dollars. However, at a later date a federal judge awarded 24 million dollars to the Utah based company. This was for lost profit and willful stealing of their design .
Both machines come with cookbooks that are complete with many recipes to get you started, most very simple.
Various online retailers sell both blenders as do “road shows” at club stores such as Costco or Sam’s Club. This tends to be the least expensive way to purchase. However, it is important to note that the models can differ from what is available on the manufactures website. In any case you can expect to spend approximately $400, or more. This is regardless of where you decide to purchase and which model that you choose.
At the original time that I wrote this article (May, 2012) I had used Facebook as a general indicator of popularity. If we still use that as an indicator the tides have definitely turned. In 2012, BlendTec had over 99,000 likes and VitaMix had not even reached 25,000. Today BlendTec has reached over 179,000 but Vitamix clearly wins this particular popularity contest with over 241.000 likes.
In the end though the choice is, of course, yours as both BlendTec and Vitamix are great blenders. Regardless of what blender that you choose put your blender to work. It can help to open up a whole new level of possibilities for enjoying your fruits and vegetables.
I would love it if you would share your smoothie recipes by commenting on this post.
